Flowering pond plants, bathing garden birds, whirring insects – with the joy of their own garden pond, the majority of its owners are more than the desire to liven it up with a variety of fish. Now, with rising temperatures, the fish are starting to move again. At about ten or twelve degrees Celsius, they are awakened and sometimes show themselves at the water surface. But how many fish make sense at all? This depends on garden pond size, type and extent of feeding and whether the garden pond friend would like to use technology or not.

How many fish does the garden pond need?

For the biotope pond, i.e. without additional support and feeding, the rule of thumb is: Approximately eight to ten centimeters fish length per 1,000 liters of water volume. Example: If your garden pond has a volume of about 10,000 liters (for example width 2m, length 5m, depth 1m), then the equivalent of ten fish of eight to ten centimeters in size are ok. These are not many for the size of the pond but only so find the self-sufficient with appropriate planting year round sufficient food reserves.

Feeding right!

If you prefer to see more fish, you have to feed. However, in order not to catch algae problems due to the not to be underestimated nutrient input through feed and fecal matter, it is absolutely necessary to install a reasonably large and effective filter system. Not only the amount of food for pond fish fans is an issue, but also on its quality, it is important to pay attention.

To strengthen the garden pond fish that has just awakened from their hibernation, vitamin-rich and protein-rich fish food is now available in spring. It is worth taking a look at the quality of the feed: the better and more fish-friendly, the higher the actual nutrient yield from the animal and the lower the burden on the quality of the water.

Which fish use?

In the natural pond fish species such as Aland and bitterlings, minnow and Moderlieschen fit. They are comparatively small and well suited as schooling fish for the garden pond. Such swarms are pretty to look at as they move through the shallow water. However, these so-called biotopes are also natural: their dark back is their protective camouflage. Who keeps biotopes in the garden pond, must look more closely. However, there are also more eye-catching varieties, such as Goldorfen and Goldschleien. And there are even gold trout.

It is relaxing and exhilarating to observe fish in the pond. In China, therefore, hundreds of years ago began to breed fish that show their full splendor from above. That’s how the goldfish came to be. Over the centuries, many varieties of goldfish have been developed, including Sarassa and Shubunkin. By the way, koi are only indirectly related to goldfish. Their stem form is the carp.
