Year after year, the poinsettia is the star of the Advent and Christmas season. From November onwards, it is impossible to imagine interior design without it, as it heralds the most contemplative time of the year in our homes. In the right place and with a few simple tricks, the brightly coloured bracts of the low-maintenance poinsettia can stay radiant long after Christmas time.

Christmas stars in red, white, cream, pink or rosé are as much a part of the Christmas season as Christmas trees, candle light and gifts for your loved ones. This magnificent Christmas classic provides a warming flair for your home, and they’re surprisingly easy to take care of as well.

From November, Poinsettias are available in stores everywhere. To get the most from your popular Christmas star, the first step is to make sure you buy a healthy one. Dense foliage and yellow-green budding flowers in between the coloured bracts are a sure sign of quality. Protect the poinsettia from the wind and transport it quickly to its warm new home. The travel time through cold wintry streets should be kept as short as possible, because the poinsettia is quite sensitive to the cold.

Once in its new home, the poinsettia requires a well-lit, warm location. It feels completely at home at around 20 degrees Celsius and protected from drafts and direct sunlight. If you get it right, you will be rewarded with a thriving flower. When it comes to watering, less is more: Regular, small portions of lukewarm water are all it needs. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, which the poinsettia cannot tolerate. To prolong the splendour of its coloured bracts, the water can be enriched once a month with a standard liquid fertilizer. With this little trick, the Christmas flower will long retain its radiance to the delight of children and adults alike throughout the Christmas season.

What many people do not know is that poinsettias also look great as cut flowers in a vase. Briefly dipping the cut stem into water heated to 60 degrees helps to stop the milky sap from seeping out. With this treatment, poinsettia cuttings remain radiantly beautiful for around two weeks. Source: Stars for Europe
