Gardeners who wish to combine native and exotic species of woody plants are well advised to preserve an array of existing varieties typical for their region; unusual plants can then be used judiciously to create compelling accents. There are always plants that will easily adapt to being relocated, whether it’s within your own yard or from across the globe. Nurseries offer a wide selection of trees and shrubs from all over that are sought after for their unique traits. These are the varieties that not only adapt well to a new climate, but will even thrive alongside current climatic changes.

Variety, not Homogeneity

Plant out in the spring and you’ll enjoy a refreshing new landscape as early as this summer. Fragrant blossoms, vividly colored berries, and foliage in an assortment of shapes – the combination of different trees and shrubs brings a welcome diversity to the garden. A maple, for example, makes for a striking highlight at the end of the season when its foliage turns a deep, autumnal red.

Fewer Pest Infestations

Having a wide variety of plant-life also presents a better defense against pests. Once insects have attacked one tree, they can rapidly spread to neighboring trees of the same variety, but when the adjacent trees are resistant to that particular pest, it will at least slow the pests’ progression. What’s more, beneficial organisms will feel right at home in a diversely planted garden. A mix of native and introduced plant-life offers a varied habitat that will accommodate both insects and small wildlife. Choose your plants wisely, and you can have a garden of continuously burgeoning life: honeybees and bumblebees will feed from an array of nectar flowers, and birds will find food and nesting spots.
